## Subject: English (US) Grammar
## Grade Level: Primary 6
## Duration: 45 minutes
### Objectives:
- Students will understand what contractions are.
- Students will be able to identify and form contractions.
- Students will use contractions correctly in sentences.
### Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- PowerPoint presentation or chart with examples of contractions
- Handouts/worksheets
- Flashcards with words and their contractions
- Audio/visual aids (optional)
### Lesson Outline:
#### Introduction (10 minutes)
1. **Greeting and Roll Call**
- Welcome students and take attendance.
2. **Warm-up Activity**
- Ask students to tell you what they had for breakfast, but emphasize using contractions: e.g., "I didn't have breakfast," "I’m ready to learn."
3. **Introduce Topic**
- Explain what contractions are: "Contractions are shortened forms of pairs of words. They use an apostrophe to show where letters have been omitted."
#### Main Instruction (15 minutes)
1. **Presentation**
- Use a PowerPoint presentation or a large chart to show common contractions (e.g., don't = do not, I'm = I am, it's = it is).
- Write full forms and contracted forms on the whiteboard.
2. **Interactive Explanation**
- Engage students by asking them to identify what two words make up different contractions written on the board.
- Demonstrate how the apostrophe replaces the omitted letters.
3. **Examples and Practice**
- Provide examples in sentences, both with and without contractions (e.g., "She is not at home" vs. "She isn't at home").
- Invite students to come up and write some contractions from given pairs of words on the board.
#### Guided Practice (10 minutes)
1. **Worksheet Activity**
- Hand out worksheets with exercises on forming contractions from pairs of words and filling in blanks in sentences with the appropriate contractions.
- Circulate the room to help students as needed.
2. **Flashcard Game**
- In pairs or small groups, students use flashcards with words on one side and the appropriate contractions on the other. They quiz each other by showing only the word side and having the partner give the correct contraction.
#### Independent Practice (5 minutes)
1. **Sentence Writing**
- Ask students to write 3-5 sentences using contractions from the list on the board.
- Example: "I can’t wait to go to the park after school."
#### Conclusion (5 minutes)
1. **Review and Recap**
- Recap what was learned: "Today, we learned about contractions, how they shorten word pairs with an apostrophe, and how to use them in sentences."
- Review some of the key contractions demonstrated.
2. **Homework Assignment**
- Assign a short paragraph writing exercise using at least five different contractions. Encourage creativity and make sure sentences are meaningful.
3. **Closing**
- Answer any remaining questions.
- Thank students for their participation and remind them to complete their homework.
### Assessment:
- Monitor students' participation during the class.
- Check the worksheets and sentences written for correct usage of contractions.
- Review homework for understanding and correct usage.
### Differentiation:
- **For Advanced Learners:** Ask them to create their sentences and incorporate multiple contractions within a single sentence.
- **For Struggling Learners:** Provide additional one-on-one or small group support during the guided practice and allow extra time for completion.
### Extended Activities:
- **Class Contraction Story:** Create a collaborative story where each student adds a sentence using at least one contraction, and then read the story aloud.
- **Contraction Art Project:** Have students create posters that illustrate contractions and their full forms, which can be displayed in the classroom for visual reinforcement.
